The Everly Brothers was a duo of country and rockabilly brothers and one of the greatest influences in the history of rock & amp; roll His period of fame and success was between 1957 and 1961, forming part of the Rock Hall of Fame since 1986.
They have been influenced by artists like The Beatles, Simon & amp; Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, Electric Light Orchestra, Mark Knopfler, Billy Joel, The Hollies, The Eagles, The Beach Boys or Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, among others.
Best known for his acoustic guitar and his singing in closed harmony (which is characterized by chords with small intervals), Don, the older brother, was born in Brownie, a small town now extinct on the outskirts of Central City, Kentucky. Phil was born in Chicago. Children of two lovers of Country music, (Ike and Margaret Embry Everly), the brothers grew up in Iowa. They played along with their parents on live radio and not very important live shows in the western United States.
Upon entering adolescence, they achieved a brief contract with Columbia Records, their first single being The Sun Keeps Shining, without success but they caught the attention of the renowned guitarist and successful country music artist Chet Atkins, and commented on them and get an audition with the director of Cadence Records, Wesley Rose who coincides with Atkins about his talent hire them for Cadence and it is from then on that the Everly rise to fame.
Being both good guitarists, the brothers use a closed harmony style in which each one sang a tone that usually sounded like a slow melody. In comparison with traditional harmony there are two or more voices with similar rhythm and different tones. They use guitars from the Gibson brand, using a guitar effect called tremolo in some of their songs. Gibson even took out a limited edition guitar called Gibson Jumbo Everly Brothers in his honor.
Their first album, called The Everly Brothers, contained their first two hits: “Bye Bye Love,” which had been rejected by many artists before, including Elvis Presley. Bye Bye Love reached the second place in the lists; “Wake up little Susie”, number 1 on Billboard. Followed by success Walk right back; All I Have to Do Is Dream, which was also number 1, So sad (to watch good love go bad), Lucille, When Will I Be Loved, Bird Dog and (Till) I Kissed You, among many other hits. In 1960 they changed the seal, going to Warner Brothers for the sum of one million dollars, the highest figure paid to an artist or group by a label at that time. They continued with hits like “Cathy’s Clown”, another first place on the Hit Parade and sold 8 million copies worldwide, Crying In The Rain, Temptation, How Can I Meet Her ?, True Love, among others but from 1965 onwards successes were already in a more modest way because Rose stops collaborating with them and along with him part the marriage Felice and Boudleux Bryant, authors of most of their successes so they had to start using covers of other rock & amp; amp; ; roll and own compositions, this coupled with the musical changes of the British invasion until 1968, year in which the song Bowling Green was his last success in the top 40 of Billboard, although his albums were always recognized for their quality until 1973, year in who decide to separate because of the tension in their relationship, the product of so many years of touring and strenuous work where they even had their own television program, supplying the Johnny Cash program.
From then on, both brothers continued to record separately. Don had some hits on the country music charts in the mid-1970s highlighting Brother Juck Box and Phil made good albums but only saw success in early 1983 with the duet with Cliff Richard She Means Nothing To Me. It is in 1983 that the year after great expectation and rumors confirmed the meeting of the two brothers for a historic concert on September 23 at the Albert Royal Hall in the United Kingdom.
Due to the great success of this memorable event they decide to start recording albums again. In 1984 the album EB84 becomes a worldwide success highlighting the success of the single On The Wings Of A Nightingale written by Paul McCartney especially for them, in addition to including Bob Dylan’s classic Lay Lady Lay, among other excellent songs, which again made the album recognized for its musical quality.
The following year they embark on a successful world tour and begin to prepare a new album, Born Yesterday, released in mid-1986 and promoted with a tour, music videos and television appearances.
