Petros “Pete” Sampras (Washington DC, August 12, 1971) is an American extenist who retired in 2003. In his career he won fourteen Grand Slam tournaments individually, being the third best brand of the Open Era behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. He accumulated 286 weeks as number one of the ATP ranking, being the second best mark of the Open Era, second only to Federer. In addition, he finished six years in the first place of the ATP ranking, the latter being the current record of the Open era.

He is one of seven players who have managed to win the same Grand Slam seven times, achieving this record in the Wimbledon Championship. In addition, he won the US Open five times and the Australian Open twice, while only reaching a semi-final at the Roland Garros Tournament.

Sampras won eleven ATP Masters Series titles, including three in Miami and Cincinnati, and one in Rome, and reached nineteen finals. He also won five editions of the ATP Tour World Championships.

Sampras was considered for a long time the best tennis player of all time until the arrival of Roger Federer. His duels with his compatriot Andre Agassi helped in his time to raise public interest in tennis and sowed an exciting rivalry.

Pete Sampras’s Biography

Petros Sampras is the third son of Sammy and George Sampras, two Greek immigrants, who came to the United States because of the political problems in their country. From an early age, he showed extraordinary athletic qualities. After discovering a racket in the basement, he would spend hours beating a ball against a pelota court. In 1974 his family moved to Palos Verdes (California), where the milder climate allowed him more time to play tennis.

The family enrolled in the Peninsula Racquet Club, where Sampras’ skill became evident. At the age of ten, he had already incorporated into his game the solid service, his claw and volleys that would be a trademark throughout his career.
