Peter «Pete» William Postlethwaite , OBE (Warrington, Cheshire, England, February 16, 1946 – Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, January 2, 2011), was a British actor .
Pete Postlethwaite’s Biography
He was born in Warrington, Cheshire (England), being the fourth son of Mary (Geraldine as a single woman) and William Postlethwaite. He trained at St. Mary’s University College, London, and for a time he thought about becoming a priest. Finally he devoted himself to education, before going on stage at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School.
Postlethwaite began his career at the Everyman Theater, along with Bill Nighy, Jonathan Pryce, Sher Antonio and Julie Walters, with whom he had an affair during the second half of the 1970s.
He worked regularly as a theater actor, highlighting his leading role in the play Scaramouche Jones. He worked with the British company Royal Shakespeare Company and in works such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Every Man and His Humor.
He became known internationally in 1993 when he played Giuseppe Conlon in Jim Sheridan’s film In the Name of the Father. For this work he was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor in the 66th edition of the awards.The film, also nominated for the best film Oscar, is based on the cases of the Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven.
Hollywood film director Steven Spielberg described him as “the best actor in the world” after working with him on The Lost World: Jurassic Park II and Amistad, both in 1997. He also starred in films such as The Usual Suspects (1995) and Romeo + Julieta (1996).
Among his latest films include Solomon Kane (2009), Inception (2010), The Town (2010) or Fury of Titans (2010), remake of the 1981 movie of the same title.
In 2004 he was appointed officer of the Order of the British Empire, and in 2006 he was named Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Liverpool.
In 2008, he starred in the documentary, The Age of Stupid. It deals with anthropogenic global warming through a drama with documentary elements and some humorous drawings. Postlethwaite played the role of an old man who inhabits the ruined world of the year 2055.
