Perttu Päivö Kullervo Kivilaakso was born on May 11, 1978 in Helsinki, Finland.
At the age of 5 years his father Juhani Kivilaakso taught him to play the cello, he also learned to play guitar and piano. He studied at the prestigious Sibelius classical music academy, where he met Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Antero Manninen and Max Lilja. He was going to be part of Apocalyptica but because they were underage they decided to leave him out while he continued with his studies. Some time after graduating, he entered Apocalyptica in 1999, replacing Antero.
Perttu received third place in the second International Paulo Cello Competition in Finland in 1996, when he was only 18 years old. Shortly after he joined the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra with his father, he was married to a woman named Laura, to whom he dedicated the song “Conclusion” from the album Reflections.
Some other musical projects he has worked on are the theme of the videogame Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, the soundtrack of the MAG video game with Mikko Sirén and the theme of the philadelphia films Over the Ice (2005) and Uhrit (2008).
