Perry Ellis, from Virginia, began her professional career as a retail clerk for department stores. Later, he moved to New York, where he continued to work very actively. After working as a Design Director for a well-known firm, they gave Perry the opportunity to create his own company, which he called Portfolio. He quickly gained a reputation for fresh, innovative ideas creating sophisticated and elegant clothing.
In 1978, her success allowed her to become head of her own Woman’s Collection. With his team of talented designers, he produced individual clothing and accessories that changed the American way of viewing. His extraordinary designs were admired by personalities of the upper classes, and the fashion press. By 1980, he felt that his design sensibility would also be viewed favorably by people. He became known for his non-traditional, modern classics, and was praised for consistently creating innovative garments.
At the beginning of the decade of the 1980s, Ellis’ health began to deteriorate until May 30, 1986, when he died in New York (United States). Officially it was said that his death was caused by viral encephalitis, but there were many rumors that said Ellis had AIDS.
