Percy Kilbride’s Biography
Born in San Francisco (California), he was the son of Irish immigrants. Kilbride began in the theater at twelve years of age, finally arriving on Broadway.
His film debut came with the role of “Jakey” in the film by Carole Lombard White Woman (1933). He stopped working on Broadway in 1942, and in 1945 he worked on the movie The Southerner.
In 1947 he and Marjorie Main performed the roles of Ma and Pa Kettle in The Egg and I, a film starring Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert. This film was followed by a series of titles starring Ma and Pa Kettle, with Kilbride and Main playing the main characters, although the actor also took part in other film projects. Kilbride’s last work was Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki in 1955.
Kilbride and Ralf Belmont, an actor friend, were hit by a car while walking near their home in Hollywood. Belmont died instantly, and Kilbride died several days later as a result of a head injury. He was 76 years old. He was buried at the Veteran Golden Gate Nation Cemetery in San Bruno, California.
