Peggy Ann Garner (February 3, 1932 – October 16, 1984) was an American film and theater actress.

A successful children’s actress, Garner made her first film role in 1938, and won the Academy Award for her work in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945). Performances on tapes like Black Widow (1954) failed to confirm her as an adult actress and, although she made progress in the theater, she made relatively few performances after leaving childhood.

Born in Canton (Ohio), her mother pushed her into acting, taking her to talent tests with Garner still a child. In 1938 he made his first film performance, and in the next few years he worked in productions such as Jane Eyre (1944) and The keys of the kingdom (1944). He reached the pinnacle of his success at 13 years of age, with the film A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), a performance that won him the Academy’s Youth Award.

Like many other children actors, Garner was unable to make the transition to adult roles. From the 1950s to the 1960s, she was a guest artist on various television productions, as well as a regular panelist for the NBC show Who Said That ?, working with H.V. Kaltenborn and Boris Karloff.

After finishing his film career, he ventured to act in the theater, a medium in which he had some success. In addition, and in order to have a regular income, she worked as a real estate agent and as an executive of a vehicle fleet company. His last performance in front of the cameras was a small role for a 1980 telefilm.

Garner married the singer and contest presenter Richard Hayes, from whom he divorced in 1953. Subsequently, on May 16, 1956, he married the actor Albert Salmi, divorcing the couple on March 13, 1963. Garner’s last marriage was with Kenyon Foster Brown. This union also ended in divorce. He had a single daughter, Catherine Ann Salmi, who died in 1995, at 38 years of age, due to heart disease.

Peggy Ann Garner died of pancreatic cancer in 1984 in Woodland Hills (Los Angeles), California. He was 52 years old. His remains were incinerated, and the ashes given to those close to him.
