After The Style Council dissolved in 1989, Weller rethought his future, concluding that it is time to develop a career alone and apart from his lifelong label, Polydor. In 1991 he created the independent label Freedom High Records and published in single and maxi-single format Into Tomorrow under the stage name of “The Paul Weller Movement”. A year later the economic impediments force him to close the seal and publish his first album, Paul Weller, with another independent label: Go! Discs.

From the beginning, his drummer in The Style Council Steve White accompanies him in the recordings and direct, and soon he is accompanied by guitarist Steve Cradock, a member of the group Ocean Color Scene, a group discovered and helped by Paul from his beginnings in 1989. Later he is the bassist of that group, Damon Minchella, who also enters the fixed line that accompanies Weller in studio and live.
The following three albums are considered by the music critics as a trilogy. Paul Weller denied it in an interview granted in Spain after the publication of Sonik Kicks (2012). Both this and 22 Dreams (2008, his masterpiece for some musical critics) again reached the No. 1 on the British charts. Wake Up the Nation (2010) despite having to settle for No. 2, was a gold record for sales achieved. In this album contributes in a subject the bass of The Jam, Bruce Foxton, to the low one and choirs.
