Paul Julius Gottlieb Nipkow (August 22, 1860, Lauenburg, Pomerania (now Lebork, Poland) – August 24, 1940, Berlin, Nazi Germany) was a German engineer and inventor , he is considered one of the pioneers of television.
Nipkow stood out as a child because of his knowledge in scientific subjects. For this reason, he graduated in his hometown and later enrolled in the technical school of Neustadt (west of present-day Prussia, Russia), where he studied telephony. Apart from his studies, he became interested in the discipline of optics, especially the aspects of electrophysics and physiology. There he was instructed by great professors such as Hermann von Helmhotz and Adolf Slaby.
Since then, Nipkow began to enter the world of phototelegraphy, a study on the rise in those days. In 1885, Nipkow moved to the imperial patent office in Berlin to register his invention, a request that was accepted with retroactive effect on January 6, 1884. In 1935, and electromechanical television evolved thanks to the work of the Scotsman John Logie Baird, the Nazi government inaugurated its first television station in Germany. Nipkow would be named honorary chairman of the Television Council.
He died in Berlin, Germany on August 24, 1940 at the age of 80.
