Paul Abraham Dukas (Paris, October 1, 1865-ibid, May 17, 1935) was a French composer of the impressionist school. One of his most popular works was El aprendiz de brujo.
He started playing the piano at age 5 but did not really feel his vocation until he was 14.
In 1881, he entered the Conservatoire de Paris in the harmony class of Théodore Dubois. From this period come some unpublished pages: an Air of Clytemnestre (1882) and an Ouverture du Roi Lear (1883). In 1884 he heard for the first time in the orchestra his Ouverture pour Götz von Berlichingen. The following year he was admitted as a composition student of Ernest Guiraud and in 1886 he won the first prize of counterpoint and escape. In 1888 he won the first second Prize of Rome for his Cantata Velléda, but was denied the first Grand Prix the following year, then left the conservatory and devoted himself seriously to his work.
He married Suzanne Pereyra.
