Paul Louis Charles Claudel (Villeneuve-sur-Fère, August 6, 1868 – Paris, February 23, 1955) was a French diplomat and poet. Brother of the sculptor Camille Claudel. Principal representative of French Catholicism in modern literature, all his work, which boasts, by a strange paradox, symbolism and realism, complexity and simplicity, polifacetismo and depth, appears informed by a deep religious concern in which he knew how to reconcile the orthodoxy with modernism. Academic since 1946, he cultivated lyric poetry in which he used a biblical verse in free rhythm of his own invention.
Paul Louis Charles Marie Claudel grew up in the agricultural region of Picardy as the son of an enlightened mentality-positivist and as a younger brother of Camille Claudel, who would later become a well-known sculptor.
The last years of the school were spent in the traditional Louis-le-Grand school in Paris. At the age of 18, on the eve of Christmas in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, precisely when the singing children sang the Magnificat, he had a strong religious experience and a deep conversion, becoming a fervent Catholic, as he relates. He even considered entering a Benedictine monastery, but the monks of Ligugé advised him to serve God in his lay condition.
Once he finished his studies in the École libre des Sciences politiques (Sciences po), during which he wrote poetry and was part of Mallarmé’s circle, he thought of studying oriental languages; However, he applied to be trained as a diplomat in the consular service, where he worked all his life until retirement. In this way, he worked as a diplomat in the United States, from 1893 to 1895, then in China, between 1895 and 1909 (Shanghai, Fuzhou, Beijing, Tientsin) and later in Prague, as well as brief periods in Germany, Brazil and Denmark. Between 1921 and 1927 he worked in Japan, then returned (1927-33) to the United States, and was eventually assigned to Belgium.
