Constantino “Paul” Castellano (born on June 26, 1915 – December 16, 1985), also known as “Big Pauly” (or “PC” by his relatives), was a known boss of the New York mafia. He was the successor of Carlo Gambino at the head of the criminal family Gambino, one of the oldest within the organized crime in the United States. In December 1985, Castellano was shot to death outside the Sparks Steak House restaurant in Manhattan on the orders of John Gotti, who would immediately succeed him.

Paul_Castellano’s Biography

Constantino Paul Castellano was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1915, son of Giuseppe Castellano and de Concetta (née Casatu). Giuseppe was a butcher and one of the first members of the criminal family of Mangano, the forerunner of the Gambino criminal family. Paul Castellano left school in the eighth grade to be a butcher and collect receipts from the numbers game, just like his father.

In July 1934, Castellano was arrested for the first time in Hartford, Connecticut for stealing a haberdashery. At age 19, Castellano refused to identify his two accomplices to the police and served a three-month prison sentence. By refusing to cooperate with the authorities, Castellano improved its reputation for mafia loyalty.

Catalina Castellano’s sister had married one of her cousins, Carlo Gambino, in 1926; that he was a future boss of the Gambino criminal family. In 1937 Castellano married his childhood sweetheart Nino Manno; the couple had three children (Paul, Philip, and Joseph Castellano) and a daughter, Constance Castellano. His nephew was the actor Richard S. Castellano of El Padrino.

(Note: Many sources claim that Paul was married to Carlo Gambino’s sister-in-law. While this claim is technically true, it is also misleading, any woman married to Paul would be Carlo Gambino’s sister-in-law, since Paul Catalina’s sister was married to Carlo Gambino in 1926. Nino Manno was not related to Carlo Gambino before his marriage to Paul.)

Castellano often signed his name as “C. Paul Castellano” because he hated his first name, Costantino. He eventually became known as Paul. Measured (189 cm) tall and weighing 270 pounds (122.5 kg), Castellano intimidated other mobsters with his size.
