Patrick Dewaere (January 26, 1947 – July 16, 1982) was a French theatrical and film actor.
Born in Saint-Brieuc, in the Côtes-d’Armor department (France), his mother was the French actress Mado Maurin.
Patrick Dewaere was one of the most popular and promising French actors of the 1970s. In 1968 he joined the group of theater performers Café de la Gare, a collective that included future stars such as Gérard Depardieu and Miou-Miou. After acting in its beginnings with the pseudonym of Patrick Maurin, finally adopted the stage name Dewaere, as I remember the name of his grandmother’s maiden.
From 1971 he played small roles for the screen, but his first big role came in the anarchic Bertrand Blier comedy Les valseuses (1974), in which he and Gérard Depardieu played two young criminals. Dewaere returned to work with Depardieu and Blier in an Oscar-winning comedy, Preparez Vos Mouchoirs (1978).
Despite Dewaere’s obvious talent for comedy, he was often chosen to play fragile and neurotic individuals successfully. In one of those roles, which he did in the black comedy Paradis Pour Tous (1982), his character ended up committing suicide. Shortly after the premiere of the film Dewaere himself committed suicide by shooting himself with a rifle at his home in Paris, he was 35 years old. His remains were incinerated, and the ashes scattered. For 11 years Dewaere had been married to the French actress Sotha.
In 1983 the Patrick Dewaere Prize was created in France in tribute to the actor. Dewaere was also the object of the French documentary Patrick Dewaere, premiered at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival.
