Patricia_Cornwell’s Biography

Descendant of the abolitionist writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, Cornwell was born in Miami, Florida. Cornwell says there are many similarities between her and the main character in her novels, Kay Scarpetta. Both were born in Miami, divorced, and had difficult relationships with their deceased parents.

Cornwell’s father, Sam Daniels, was one of the most important appellate lawyers in the United States, and served as secretary to Supreme Court Judge Hugo Black. According to Cornwell, the traces of his motivations in his life arise from the emotional abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, who left his family on Christmas Day 1961.

He was on his deathbed. We knew it would be the last time we would see each other; He took my brother’s hand and muttered ‘I love you’, but he did not touch me at any time. All he did was write me on a sheet ‘How is the work going?

In 1961, Cornwell’s family moved to Montreat, North Carolina, where her mother was hospitalized because of clinical depression, and the children were placed under state guardianship. By the end of her adolescence, Cornwell confessed, she was anorexic and suffering from depression. William Graham’s wife, Ruth Bell, encouraged Cornwell to write.

Corwell originally attended King College in Bristol, Tennessee and later moved to Davidson College, in the town of the same name in North Carolina. Shortly after graduating in English philology, she married one of her English teachers, Charles Cornwell, who was 17 years older than her. Charles Cornwell abandoned his career as a teacher to become a preacher, and Patricia began writing a biography of Ruth Bell.

In 1979, Cornwell started working as a reporter for The Charlotte Observer and soon went on to cover the news about crimes. His biography of Ruth Bell, A Time for Remembering (renamed Ruth, A Portrait: The Story of Ruth Bell Graham in later editions), was published in 1983. In 1984, he accepted a position in the office of Chief Medical Examiner (Chief Medical Examiner ) of Virginia. She worked there for six years, first as a technical writer and then as a computer analyst. She also volunteered to work with the Richmond Police Department. In 1989, Cornwell divorced.

In the 1980s Cornwell wrote three novels that he says were rejected before being published, but in 1991 he had one of his greatest hits, Post mórtem.

In 2011 she won the V RBA Black Novel Award for her work Red Mist (Red Mist), starring Kay Scarpetta, a forensic doctor.
