Patricia Mae Andrzejewski was born from a family of Polish and Irish origin in Brooklyn, and grew up in Lindehurst, New York, initially studying opera as her mother. A short time later she moved to Richmond (Virginia) where she worked as a teller in a bank and at night she sang.
