Otto Johann Maximilian Strasser (Windsheim, Bavaria, Germany, September 10, 1897 – Munich, August 27, 1974) was a German soldier and politician from the left wing of the NSDAP. He maintained more radical positions than those of Hitler, whom he considered too moderate, especially in his economic policy complacent with industrial capitalism. He advocated a national-socialist and anti-capitalist revolution with socialist stateizing factors. He was the brother of the also Nazi politician Gregor Strasser.
He fought in the First World War. When returning to Bavaria in 1919, he played in the Freikorps that ended with the Soviet Republic of Bavaria. During those years, he also joined the SPD. In 1920 he opposed the coup of Kapp and in 1925 he participated in the refoundation of the NSDAP, in which he served several years as a party journalist. He tried to develop the socialist line in the Nazi program of 25 points, which he considered insufficient to establish a true socialism. He created a faction in the NSDAP along with his brother Gregor and Joseph Goebbels.
Through strikes they advocated the nationalization of banks and industries and closer ties with the USSR. These positions were diametrically opposed to the policy of Hitler, who considered contradictory since they could not support a communist regime created and directed by Jews, in addition those measures were not to the liking of important parts of the German people who supported the government (especially for the classes media and industrial). The Strasser faction in the NSDAP was defenestrated in 1926 at the Bamberg Conference, when Joseph Goebbels changed his support from the Strasser brothers to Hitler. Otto Strasser and his brother Gregor continued to lead the left wing of the NSDAP until 1930, when Otto Strasser was expelled, on the contrary his brother Gregor Strasser remained in the party until his assassination in 1934 for his conflicts with Himmler and Göering.
