Orson Welles Short Bio

George Orson Welles (Kenosha, Wisconsin, May 6, 1915-Hollywood, California, October 10, 1985) was an American actor, director, screenwriter and producer.

Considered one of the most versatile artists of the century & nbsp; xx in the field of theater, radio and cinema, he achieved success at twenty-three thanks to the radio play The War of the Worlds, which caused a stir in the States United when many listeners of the program thought that it was a true retransmission of an alien invasion. This sensational debut earned him a contract for three films with the film studio RKO, which gave him absolute freedom in his achievements. Despite these benefits, only one of his planned projects could see the light: Citizen Kane (1941), his most successful film.

In 1946, under the suspicion of being a communist, his career in Hollywood stagnated and he was forced to move to Europe, where he worked as an actor to finance his productions, something characteristic of the period of McCarthyism, during which numerous characters from public life were accused of belonging to this ideological current and, with that, being enemies of the United States. About the time, Welles himself wrote: “The bad thing about the American left is that it betrayed to save its pools. And there were no American rights in my generation. They did not exist intellectually. There were only lefts and they were betrayed. Because the lefts were not destroyed by McCarthy; they were the ones that were demolished giving way to a new generation of nihilists ». Despite his persecution and due to his triumph in Europe, in 1958 Welles was able to return to Hollywood for the shooting of his film Touch of Evil among other titles of capital relevance in his career.

Among his many other projects, he highlights the production and directing of films such as Macbeth (1948), Otelo (1952), El proceso (1962) and F for Fake (1975), among others. His last appearance was on television, making a cameo in the soap opera Luz de luna; he died five days before the episode was broadcast, his fame grew after his death in 1985 and he is now considered one of the greatest film and theater directors of the century & nbsp; xx. In 2002 he was chosen by the British Film Institute as the best director in the history of cinema.
