He played as first base. \n Cepeda was born into a poor family, his father, Pedro Cepeda, was a baseball player in Puerto Rico, a fact that influenced his interest in the sport from an early age. His first contact with professional baseball came when he was a batboy for the Cangrejeros de Santurce of Puerto Rico. Pedro Zorilla, the owner of the team, convinced his family to let him attend an aptitude test for the New York Giants. He played in several Minor League teams before going to play with the Giants, who had moved to San Francisco. \n During a career that lasted 16 years, he played for teams San Francisco Giants (1958-1966), St. Louis Cardinals (1966-1968), Atlanta Braves (1969-1972), Oakland Athletics (1972), Boston Red Sox (1973) and Kansas City Royals (1974). Cepeda played in seven All-Star Games, becoming the first Puerto Rican player to start one. In 1978, Cepeda was sentenced to five years in prison on drug possession charges, of which he was only incarcerated for 10 months and the remaining time of the sentence was on parole. In 1987, Cepeda was hired by the San Francisco Giants to work as a scout and as an "ambassador of goodwill."
