King, Nancy Wilson and Parliament Funkadelic. \n In 1970 he met bassist Bernard Edwards and formed a rock band called The Boys with which they never got a record contract because the companies rejected them when they discovered they were black; according to the executives of these companies, blacks could not play rock music. These experiences and the activism of the time led Rodgers to become actively involved with the Black Panthers. \n In 1977 Rodgers and Edwards together with Tony Thompson formed the funk Chic group. The group is credited with a more disco character since it achieved many hits in the disco era and even helped popularize it with songs like "Everybody Dance", "Le Freak" and "Good Times". This last one marked the beginning of Hip-hop to have been used by Sugarhill Gang in the famous song "Rapper's Delight". Chic was dissolved in 1983 and Rodgers dedicated himself to music production, something he already knew well since in 1980 he had already produced the hits Upside Down and I'm Coming Out for Diana Ross. \n Along with Edwards he produced in 1983 the album by David Bowie Let's Dance and in 1985 Madonna's Like a Virgin. Duran Duran worked intensively with Rodgers who produced hits such as "The Reflex" and "The Wild Boys". He also worked with John Taylor and Andy Taylor on the project The Power Station. In 1986 he produced Duran Duran's Notorious album and his friendship with them has led him to work also on his comeback album called Astronaut or in the last of these, Paper Gods. \n In 1992 Rodgers and Edwards organized Chic's meeting, recorded new material and went on tour with some success. In 1996 the Billboard magazine gave him the title of Greatest Producer of the World . That year he participated in a series of concert tributes in Japan with Bernard Edwards, Sister Sledge, Steve Winwood, Simon Le Bon and Slash. Unfortunately, his lifelong music partner Bernard Edwards died of pneumonia during that tour, a blow that affected him a lot. \n The Attacks of September 11, 2001 led Rodgers to found the We Are Family Project. Initially he recorded the song of Sister Sledge We Are Family with 200 celebrities and more than 100 children of stars.
