He studied botany at the University of Bristol until he was 22 years old. He began his career in audiovisual media at the Natural History Unit of the BBC in Bristol. In the following years he worked first as a researcher of nature documentaries for programs such as My Family and Other Animals and then went on to produce series such as The Land of the Russian Bear. He worked professionally for 12 years with David Attenborough. In 1998, he moved to the ITV, where he was invited to produce and present documentaries about wildlife.
He is known for his unorthodox, spontaneous and daring style in the presentation of wildlife documentaries. This has led some people to compare him with the late Steve Irwin. In his first ITV television series, Gigantes, he swam among great white sharks without the protection of a cage. Other scenes show him walking a Goliath tarantula (possibly the biggest spider in the world) by his face and dealing with a five-meter python in his underground lair. To date he has presented 21 series on wildlife for television.
In 2003, the producer Impossible Pictures asked him to appear in the documentary fiction series Chased by Dinosaurs (Persecuted by Dinosaurs), being literally pursued by dinosaurs (though using special effects) in the episodes «The giant claw» and « Land of giants “, as well as by sea monsters. Later it appeared in Prehistoric Park, of ITV; a series of fiction that deals with time travel to rescue creatures on the verge of extinction, like two young tyrannosaurs (Terence and Matilda) in episode 1, Marta the Woolly Mammoth in episode 2 and others. In 2009 in season 3 (episode 4) of the action series Primeval plays with a baby velociraptor before serving dinner to a giganotosaurus. Both series were also made by Impossible Pictures.
During a simulated encounter with a prehistoric mammal in Prehistoric Park, Marven defined himself as a vegan. In December of 2007 he made his last series of adventures, in which he followed the polar bear track.
