Nickel Creek Short Bio

Nickel Creek is an American acoustic musical trio with roots in bluegrass, whose music is often labeled as newgrass or “progressive bluegrass.” The band consists of three permanent members: Chris Thile (mandolin), Sara Watkins (violin) and Sean Watkins (guitar). The fourth member of the group is not fixed, although he has an important part in his concerts. In recent years it has been Mark Schatz (acoustic bass) who has occupied this place; before him they had been part of the group Scott Thile (father of Chris Thile), Edgar Meyer, Byron House and Robert Trujillo.

During his recording career, the musical style of Nickel Creek has evolved with the incorporation of elements of independent rock. They have played songs by Radiohead, Pavement and Bob Dylan. However, its roots in bluegrass continue to be the essential element of its work.
