His beginnings

Born in New York of Cuban parents with Spanish ancestry on the side of his father: Carbonell (Catalonia) and Cortina (Basque Country), and on the side of his mother: Ramírez de Arellano (Navarra) and Cárdenas (Jaén). Carbonell moved with his family to Caracas, Venezuela, where he attended The British School Caracas. Then, he returned to the United States and took classes at the Deerfield Academy and at Harvard University in the late 1980s. His father is a business executive, and has an active role in the Cuban community. Carbonell is the cousin of former professional baseball player Rafael Palmeiro.

Career as an actor

Carbonell had recurring roles on Resurrection Blvd., The Tick (as Batman), Strong Medicine, Kim Possible (as the voice of Senior Lord, Jr.) and Cold Case. He was also a guest actor on Scrubs (“My Moment of Un-Truth”), House M.D. (“Cursed”), Day Break and Monk. In the Suddenly Susan program, he played the role of Luis Rivera for 4 seasons.

He has won awards such as the 1999 ALMA Awards for best actor in a comedy series by Suddenly Susan and La Estrella in the Horizon Award (President Award) at the Fort Lauderdale International Festival in 2003. He has been nominated for many others awards in the ALMA and the NCLR awards.

Carbonell interweaved Richard Alpert for seven episodes in the third season of Lost, and the mysteries surrounding his ever-young character were much discussed by the fan community.While the last episodes of the third season were being produced, Carbonell was chosen for the role of Richard Alpert towards the end of the fourth season, as a result of the cancellation of Cane. Carbonell appeared in the episodes “Cabin Fever” and “There’s No Place Like Home.” Cuse said that this was an unintended positive consequence of the scriptwriters strike, Carbonell appeared in nine episodes of Season 5. It was announced that he would be part of the main cast during the sixth season.

In 2006 he appeared in the film Smokin ‘Aces, as the murderer Pasquale Acosta. In 2008, he played the mayor of Gotham in Christopher Nolan’s film The Dark Knight, and his wife, Shannon Kenny, was involved in the Batman project before, playing Inque’s voice on the Batman Beyond TV series.

As of 2011 he appears with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the new series of The CW, Ringer, playing actor Victor Machado.

In the year 2012 appears in the film Cristiada with the character of Mayor Picazo.

In the year 2013 appears in the TV series Bates Motel with the character of Sheriff Alex Romero.

Personal life

Nestor and his wife, Shannon Kenny, met while working on the movie Attention Shoppers, even though their lashes look darker, as if they used eyeliner or mascara, in interviews with Carbonell and with producers of Lost has been confirmed that he does not use it. Can speak Spanish and masters accents.
