Neneh Marianne Karlsson Cherry (born March 10, 1964 in Stockholm) is a Swedish singer, songwriter, rapper, disc jockey and broadcaster. Cherry often mixes hip-hop with other musical influences, experiencing a generous commercial success with many of her albums.

Daughter of Ahmadu Jah and Monika Karlsson, was born in Stockholm on March 10, 1964. Her father is a drummer from Sierra Leone and her mother is a Swedish painter and textile artist. His brothers are the singers Titiyo and Eagle-Eye Cherry. Her stepfather, jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, was the one who raised her from birth, which is why Neneh adopted her name.

Neneh lived during his first years of life in the small Swedish town of Hässleholm. Soon, his mother met Don and the family accompanied him on his tours throughout Europe and North America. In the early ’70s, the Cherry family moved to a small apartment in New York.

In 1984 Neneh and her then husband, Bruce Smith, had their first daughter Naima. That same year they divorced.

Three years later, Cherry met producer Cameron McVey at Heathrow Airport. Neneh and Cameron had been sent to Japan as models of fashion designer Ray Petri. After Neneh proposed marriage to McVey, they both married in 1990. Together they have two daughters: Tyson, born in 1989, and Mabel, born in 1996. Cherry and McVey are also tied labor, as Cameron produced and co-wrote the debut album by Neneh Cherry: Raw Like Sushi. Together they have supported several major brand British acts, in addition to working together in the band Cirkus.

The Cherry-McVey have lived throughout Europe. In 1993, they moved to Benalmádena, near Málaga, Spain, and lived there until 1999. They tried to live in New York in 1995, however, they were victims of armed robbery by a teenager. Due to this incident, the whole family sought safety in Primrose Hill, London. That same year, his stepfather, Don Cherry, dies from a liver failure resulting from hepatitis. Later, they returned to Neneh’s hometown in Sweden, living in the same house where Cherry grew up. Currently, they divide their time between their home near Malmö and Sweden.

In 2004, Neneh’s first daughter gave birth to a child, making Cherry the grandmother of Louis Clyde Flynn Love.
