Neko Case (born September 8, 1970 in Alexandria, Virginia) is an American singer-songwriter, best known for her solo career and as a member of The New Pornographers.

His music is commonly labeled as alternative country, although Case does not describe it that way. He recorded and toured some years as Neko Case & amp; Her Boyfriends before changing to his own name. Case usually writes his own material, but also interprets and has recorded versions of songs by artists such as Loretta Lynn, Tom Waits, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and even Queen. Frequently implanted funny narratives in his live shows, a habit he claims to have taken from Wanda Jackson.

She is very protective of her artistic independence, combined with her punk ethics of DIY (Do It Yourself), a strong sense of business, and clear opinions about her artistic goals. She has turned down offers from big labels because they did not offer her enough control over her music, staying sharp with Mint Records in Canada and Bloodshot and ANTI- in the United States.

Although he grew up in the United States, he started his musical career in Canada. He lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, from 1994 to 1998, playing with a variety of punk bands, especially in Cub and Maow, and recording his first country album. He frequently collaborates with Canadian musicians, including The New Pornographers, The Sadies and Carolyn Mark, and has recorded material by several Canadian composers, notable in his EP Canadian Amp (2001). As a result, he is also considered a significant figure in Canadian music.

“I hopecan comfort people a little-maybe teach people that making music is fun and accessible to them too.” I’m not out here to become Faith Hill,do not want to play in a stadium, anddo not want to to be at the MTV Video Music Awards, much less to make a video with me on it,would like to reach a wider audience and see the state of the music, change in favor of musicians and music fans throughout my lifereally care about that. “

Neko Case’s Biography

Case was born to Ukrainian parents. His family traveled a lot when he was young before settling in Tacoma, Washingyon, the city that is considered his city of residence. He left home when he was 15 years old.

In 1994, Case moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to attend the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. While attending school he played drums in various local bands, including The Del Longs , The Propanes , The Weasles , Cub < / b> (which also included Robynn Iwata fromAM SPOONBENDER), and Maow . They were all local punk bands except for Cub and The Weasles, which Case described as a “country supergroup”.

The Virginian and Mass Romantic

Case fully adopted country music on his 1997 album with Her Boyfriends The Virginian. The album contained original compositions and versions of songs by Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn and even Queen’s song, “Misfire” from 1974. When the album came out, critics compared Neko Case with honky-tonk singers like Lynn and Patsy Cline.

In 1998, Case graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, which meant he lost his student visa. He left Canada for Seattle, Washington. Before leaving, even so, Case recorded the vocal parts for a series of songs that ended in Mass Romantic, the first album of The New Pornographers. Their vocal parts in songs such as “Letter from an Occupant” are honest power-pop performances, stripping away any country element. Once the album was released on November 28, 2000, Mass Romantic became a surprising success. Originally conceived as a side project of its members, The New Pornographers decided to rotate together and finally record a second album.

Furnace Room Lullaby

On February 22, 2000, Case released his second solo album with Her Boyfriends, Furnace Room Lullaby. A complete set of 12 original songs, Lullaby introduced the elements of “country noir” that have defined the solo career of Case onwards. That tone was true even by the photo on the cover, including Case on the floor like a corpse on a concrete floor. Already within the album, his vocal style moves away from the categorical honky-tonk but retains his vibrant comparisons with musicians such as Cline, Lynn, Hazel Dickens, Tanya Tucker, and Dolly Parton. The song that gives title to the disc was included the sound track of the film of Sam Raimi The Gift, and “Porchlight” was included in the sound track of The Slaughter Rule.

Case sometimes toured with her friend, Canadian singer-songwriter Carolyn Mark, as The Corn Sisters. One of his performances, at Hattie’s Hat in Seattle in Ballard, was recorded and released as an album, The Other Women, on November 28, 2000.

Around the time Lullaby left, Case left Seattle for Chicago because he felt Seattle was not very hospitable to his local artists.

Case’s first work in Chicago was an EP of eight songs he recorded in his kitchen. Canadian Amp, her first work without Her Boyfriends, came out on her own label Lady Pilot in 2001. She wrote two of the songs. Six songs were versions, including Neil Young’s song “Dreaming Man” and Hank Williams’s “Alone and Forsaken”. Four of the versions were written by Canadian artists. The EP was initially only available at Case’s concerts, but eventually his output was wider.

Case recorded his third full-length, Blacklisted, in Tucson, Arizona. Her first edition in which she only appeared in the credits, without Her Boyfriends, which came out on August 20, 2002. Some believe that the title “Blacklisted” (on the blacklist) alludes to Case being censored for life of the Grand Ole Opry because he took off his shirt during a performance on August 4, 2001, although Case herself has denied this. She was asked about the incident in 2004, and Case responded, “I had sunstroke, people would have loved it if it had been a punk thing like fuck you, but it was actually a physical ailment.”

Most of the 14 songs on the album are original, except for the versions of “Running Out Of Fools,” previously a hit by Aretha Franklin, and “Look For Me (I’ll Be Around).” Blacklisted boosts the sound of “country noir,” and was described by critics as exuberant, gray and atmospheric. Case quoted director David Lynch, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and Neil Young’s soundtrack for the movie Dead Man as influences. One song, “Deep Red Bells,” was inspired by Case’s memories of being a vulnerable young woman from the Seattle area when the Green River Killer was loose.

In April 2003, Case was voted “The Sexiest Babe of the Indie Rock,” in an online poll on playboy.com, receiving 32% of the vote. Playboy asked her to pose nude for her magazine, but she declined the offer. He told Entertainment Weekly magazine that “I did not want to be the girl who posed in Playboy and then – by the way -did some music, would be very angry if after a show someone came up to me and gave me a picture of me andwould like it to be signed instead of my CD “. In more recent interviews she refused to discuss the survey.

Electric Version and Twin Cinema

The New Pornographers’ second album, Electric Version, came out on May 6, 2003. Case sang in even more songs on this album, and made a new tour with the group.

On April 3 and 4, 2004, Case played two shows with longtime collaborators The Sadies at Lee’s Palace in Toronto, which they recorded as a live album The Tigers Have Spoken, in October. same year.

Twin Cinema, the third album of The New Pornographers was released on August 23, 2005, in which Case again sang in various songs. In addition to providing accompanying vocals, Case is the lead singer in two ballads, “The Bones of an Idol” and “These Are The Fables.”

Fox Confessor Brings the Flood

Fox Confessor Brings the Flood was released on March 7, 2006. The album was first recorded in Tucson, Arizona over the course of two years while Neko worked on his live album “The Tigers Have Spoken” and continued to play with The New Pornographers Critics hailed the album not only because of Neko’s voice, but also because of his use of harsh images and infrequent structures. Fox Confessor Brings The Flood was found in many lists of the best of 2006, like number 1 the musical choice of the editors of Amazon.com, and number 2 in the All Songs Considered of NPR.
