Neil_Gaiman’s Biography

Neil Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960 in the city of Portchester, England, and was raised in Sussex. As a child he cultivated a great fondness for reading, both books (G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien) and comics. His biggest dream was to become a writer and for that reason he did not finish his studies and he began to work collaborating in various publications as a critic, columnist or interviewer. One of those interviews, with Alan Moore, changed his life: he woke up in him his old fondness for comics and began to consider the possibility of writing stories for this medium, instructed by Alan Moore. After a couple of filming jobs, in 1986 he meets Dave McKean, a young draftsman with a peculiar style and together they create his first graphic novel, Violent Cases.

At that time, Alan Moore’s success with The Swamp Thing led DC Comics publishers to look for new talent in the British Isles. Karen Berger, publisher of DC, manages to bring to the United States a generation of writers that will mark a milestone in the North American Comic Book industry; among them is Gaiman.

Gaiman begins his tour of the American market in 1988 with Black Orchid, and Karen Berger happy with the result, suggests a monthly series to the British scriptwriter. To do this, Neil decides to create a new character, based on Anglo-Saxon folklore called The Sandman, who would unfold in a supernatural and dreamlike environment, away from the typical superhero comic that predominates in the market.

In this new story, Gaiman recreates the life of Morpheus, his brothers, The Eternal, his loves, his proud character, his dramatic figure and the changes that happen to his regret, all with the wonderful covers of the friend McKean.

As a television screenwriter he collaborated on the episode Day of the Dead of the fifth season of the series Babylon 5. He wrote two episodes of the British science fiction series Doctor Who. In 2011, The Doctor’s Wife was aired and won in 2012 the Hugo Award for the best dramatic presentation (short format), and in the seventh season of the series in 2013 in the Nightmare in Silver chapter. He played the voice of an animated character based on himself, for episode 6 of season 23 of The Simpsons, aired on November 20, 2011 and participated in the documentary Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked, produced by History Channel. It was also confirmed that Gaiman will write some episodes for the television adaptation of his novel “American Gods” on the Starz channel.

Lives near Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, in an Addams Family-style home, is divorced from Mary T. McGrath and has three children: Michael, Holly and Madeleine. On January 15, 2010, he announced on his blog his marital commitment with the American singer Amanda Palmer.

In mid-2015 he announced on social networks the pregnancy of his wife Amanda Palmer along with her, this being the result of her first child.
