Neil Andrew Carter (born May 11, 1958, Bedfont, Middlesex, England) is a British musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist, known for his involvement in bands such as Wild Horses, UFO and guitarist Gary Moore.
Since he was a child he studied and learned to play different musical instruments and with only 17 years old he played for the English singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan. In the middle of 1979 he joined the British band Wild Horses as keyboard player and rhythmic guitarist, where he recorded the self-titled album in 1980 and after the promotional tour he retired after receiving an invitation from UFO.
In this band he collaborated for the first time in the composition, which was mainly seen in the Mechanix albums of 1982 and in Making Contact of 1983. During the second semester of 1983 Gary Moore called him to collaborate with his solo career, with him he achieved fame both as a singer and as a co-writer.
After the release of After the War in 1989, he left Gary to participate as a classical musician in some European symphony orchestras. At the same time, he started his career as a music teacher, mainly teaching saxophone and clarinet. In 2010 he again collaborated with Gary on extensive tours around Europe and where he participated in the recordings of the live album Live at Montreux 2010 and stayed with him until the day of his death in February 2011.
He is currently a professor and saxophone director of the children’s orchestra at Brighton College in England. He is also the leader of the student swing band of that establishment.
