Neil Armstrong Short Bio
Neil Alden Armstrong (Wapakoneta, Ohio, August 5, 1930 – Cincinnati, Ohio, August 25, 2012) was an American astronaut and the first human being to set foot on the Moon. He was also an aerospace engineer, military pilot, test pilot and university professor. Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong served as an officer of the United States Navy and participated as an aviator in the Korean War. After this conflict, he obtained his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and worked as a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) at the High Speed Flight Station, current Armstrong Flight Research Center in his honor.
After participating in the programs to take a man to the space of the Air Force of the United States and the one of space flight manned Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar, Armstrong was united to the body of astronauts of the NASA in 1962. He made his first space flight in 1966 as pilot-in-command of the Gemini 8 mission during which he carried out the first coupling between two spacecraft together with pilot David Scott.
Armstrong’s second and last space flight was in July 1969 as commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, during which he pronounced the famous phrase “It is a small step for a man, but a great leap for humanity” . He walked alongside Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the Moon and explored it for two and a half hours while his partner Michael Collins waited for them in the lunar orbit aboard the command module. After his return to Earth with Aldrin and Collins, Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. In 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter presented him with the Space Medal of Honor from Congress and in 2009 the three crewmembers of Apollo 11 received the Gold Medal of the United States Congress.
Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio, aged 82, due to complications of a coronary bypass.
