Nawaz Sharif Short Bio
Nawaz Sharif (December 25, 1949) is a politician and Pakistani tycoon, who held the post of prime minister of Pakistan between 2013 and 2017, as well as between 1990 and 1993 and between 1997 and 1999. He has also held the position of chief minister of the Punjab between 1985 and 1990. He is also president of Ittefaq, an important business corporation dedicated to the production of steel.
Sharif is known for his entrepreneurial career and his political career as an Islamist and conservative leader. His first term (which took place between 1990 and 1993) was marked by the permanent tension between his Cabinet and the Pakistan Army, which ended up forcing him to resign under the threat of a coup d’état.
After this event, Sharif became the main leader of the opposition, maintaining high levels of popularity throughout the term of his successor, Benazir Bhutto. Finally, the 1997 Pakistani elections gave Sharif a broad victory, which allowed him to form a second government.
That second term was characterized by a marked increase in the tension between Pakistan and India, which culminated in the 1998 Pakistani nuclear tests, ordered by Sharif in response to a similar action by India. Despite international mediation attempts, relations between the governments of both countries remained very cold during the following years.
In October 1999 General Pervez Musharraf gave a coup d’état against the Sharif Executive, seeing himself forced into exile in Saudi Arabia. From there, he tried to coordinate an opposition to the regime, which was concretized with the founding in 2001 of the Muslim League of Pakistan-N; a political group opposed to General Musharraf.
At the end of 2007, Sharif finally managed to return to Pakistan at a time when the Musharraf regime was reeling. His party was authorized to participate in the 2008 elections, but was second only to the People’s Party of Pakistan, led by those close to Benazir Bhutto. Despite initially showing willingness to govern along with the PPP, Sharif quickly decided to remain in the opposition, along with his MPs.
