Naomi Kawase (in Japanese 河 瀬 直 美) Nara (Japan), May 30, 1969, is a film director and writer. His work revolves around the intimate life, the search for origins and identity. In 1997 she was the youngest award-winning filmmaker in the history of the Cannes Film Festival when she won the Golden Camera Award for her film Moe no Suzaku.
Abandoned by her parents, she grew up with her great aunt. His adoptive family is the protagonist of his first works. He graduated from the School of Photography in Osaka in 1989 where he subsequently worked as a teacher for 4 years.
In 1993 his documentary short film Abrazando el aire was awarded at the Image Image Festival of Japan with Katatsumori, which earned him the Excellence Award in the New Trends in Asia program. In 1996 he released his documentary film Sol de atardecer and a year later he wrote and directed Suzaku, his first fiction feature film.
In the year 2000 Hotaru was premiered in the competitive section of the Locarno Festival, where he won the Fipresci Prize and the CICAE Prize. In 2003 his third feature film, Shara, was selected for the Official Selection of Cannes; in 2006 she directed a documentary about her own pregnancy and delivery, Birth and Motherhood, and in 2007 she competed again in the Official Section of the Week with The Forest of Mourning.
