Mose John Allison Jr. (Tippo, Mississippi, November 11, 1927 – Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, November 15, 2016), known as Mose Allison < / b>, was an American jazz pianist, singer and composer.
His pianistic style oscillated between the conventionalisms of boogie woogie and bebop and the innovation of blues and hard-bop. As a composer (recognized especially for his blussistic compositions), his songs have been recorded by musicians such as The Clash (“Look Here”), The Who (“Young Man Blues”), Leon Russell (“I’m Smashed”), Bonnie Raitt (“Everybody’s Cryin ‘Mercy”) and Jorge Drexler (“I do not worry about a thing”). He is admired by Tom Waits, John Mayall, Georgie Fame, the Rolling Stones and Van Morrison.
His first contacts with the blues were through the records of Louis Jordan, with songs like “Outskirts of Town” and “Pinetop Blues.” Allison has ensured that Jordan is his main influence, in addition to Nat “King” Cole, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller.
He started playing the trumpet but later he switched to the piano. In his youth, he had easy access through radio to the music of Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons and Meade “Lux” Lewis. Allison also recognized the composer Percy Mayfield, “the Poet Laureate of the Blues”, as one of the main influences in his role as a composer.
After a stint at the University of Mississippi, he enlisted in the US Army for two years, his first professional job was in Lake Charles in 1950. He later attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he studied English. and philosophy, far from their initial interests in chemical engineering.
Allison began her recording career with the Prestige label in 1956, shortly after moving to New York. He recorded an album with Al Cohn and Bobby Brookmeyer, and in 1957 he got his own recording contract. A great moment was his opportunity to play with Cohn and Zoot Sims shortly after arriving in the city, although later he would be known to have played with saxophonist Stan Getz. After leaving Prestige Records, where he recorded classic albums like Back Country Suite (1957), Young Man Mose (1958) and Seventh Son (1958-1959), he signed for Columbia Records for two years before meeting Nesuhi Ertegün of Atlantic Records, a company with which he would spend most of his career. Allison also recorded for Columbia (before her time with Atlantic) and with Epic and Prestige stamps.
