Born in El Dorado, Kansas, he grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, in the United States. His first cartoon was published at age 11, and the first sold at age 12. At the age of 15 he worked as a cartoonist for a newspaper, and at 18 he became editor-in-chief of the design department at Hall Bros. After graduating from Northeast Senior High School in the school district of the city of Kansas, attended the University of Missouri – Columbia, where in front of the student center poses a life-size statue of Beetle Bailey.
In 1943 he was recruited by the United States Army and taken to Europe during World War II. He was released from his position as first lieutenant after four years. After military service and his graduation from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1948, he traveled to New York following his career as a cartoonist. His first 200 comics were rejected, but little by little he was gaining recognition among the editors for his talent. Beetle Bailey was the icebreaker of this flop of failures and his next work, Hi and Lois, was also a success. Other comic books of his authorship to stand out are Boner’s Ark, Gamin & amp; Patches, Mrs. Fitz’s Flats, The Evermores, Sam’s Strip and Sam & amp; Silo (the last two created together with Jerry Dumas).
