Milo Manara is the pseudonym of the Italian cartoonist Maurilio Manara (Luson, (province of Bolzano), September 12, 1945). He is considered the undisputed master of erotic comics, thanks to works such as “HP and Giuseppe Bergman” (1978), “El Clic” (1984) and “El perfume del invisible” (1986).

His initial vocation was that of a painter. After trying to live without success, he was an assistant to the Spanish sculptor Miguel Ortiz Berrocal, in whose library he discovered the world of comics.

During his architecture studies at the University of Venice, in 1968, he launched his first comic, Genius, a combination of black genre and eroticism published in pocket format. In 1972, he drew the series Jolanda de Almaviva, with a script by Francesco Rubino, and in parallel made posters and other graphic works for political groups. Fruit of his social awareness at that time are his various comics with a strong political message, such as Alessio il Borghese, Telerompo and Strategia della Tensione (for the Italian Socialist Party), all with a script by Sileverio Pisù. With the same screenwriter, he made The Monkey King in 1976, an adaptation of a Chinese folk legend, which appeared in the Alter magazine. For the weekly magazine Corriere dei Ragazzi, he illustrates La parola alla giuria (script by Mino Milani) and for the French publisher Larousse he makes several episodes of his L’histoire collections in bandes dessinées and La découverte du monde. Participate in the collection A man, an adventure with the album The monk of Tibet (script by Alfredo Castelli).

In 1979 he appears in the magazine À Suivre, his first work as the only author, H.P., the first installment of The Adventures of Giuseppe Bergman, in which he pays homage to Hugo Pratt. With the latter as a screenwriter, he would have the opportunity to collaborate in 1983 with “Verano Indio” and, later, with El gaucho. In addition to making live Giuseppe Bergman new exploits in the albums Maybe dream, African Adventures and Hidden Path, in 1983 debuts his most famous work, The Click, which will elevate it as one of the great authors of erotic comics and will know up to four continuations , in addition to being adapted to the theater and the cinema of real image. Within the same genre, Manara successively launches The Perfume of the Invisible – of which there is a sequel, Naked by the City, and an animated adaptation -, Intrusive Chamber, Gulliverian, Kamasutra, The Metamorphosis of Lucius, The Art of the Scourge, Fatal Quote and WWW In a more satirical line, Revolution (2000) is a critique of the powers of television networks. After working in other fields he returned to eroticism, combining it with science fiction, in Piranesi: the prison planet.

Manara has also collaborated with Federico Fellini, for whom he made posters of some of his films and the comic version of two of his scripts that he did not get to take to the movies, Viaje a Tulum and El viaje de G. Mastorna. For the filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar also illustrates his novel Fuego en las entrañas. His work is mainly devoted to illustration and advertising, as well as making comics for digital support and designing the characters for the French animated film La lègende de Parva.
