Presidential Decree №922 of December 20, 2013, with which the punishment is forgiven Mikhail Khodorkovsky, grace granted as part of the day of pardon in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
In 2004, Khodorkovsky was the richest man in Russia and the 16th in Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s largest fortunes of $ 15 billion. Most of its capital evaporated, following the accusation by the Russian government that it evaded taxes during the nineties and the subsequent devaluation of the Russian energy company YUKOS (ОАО НК ЮКОС).
Khodorkovsky was arrested on October 25, 2003 at the Novosibirsk airport. To an unprecedented extent in post-Soviet Russia, the government of Vladimir Putin froze the assets of the company. Decisions made by Russian institutions led to a total collapse in the price of YUKOS shares. Later the government tried to sell a significant part of the company at a price much lower than its real value to a RosNeft display company, in the hands of the Russian government.
Finally, on May 31, 2005, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison. In October 2005 he was transferred to camp number 13 in the Krasnokámensk prison in the former province of Chitá, now part of the Zabaikalie Territory, in southeastern Siberia.
In January 2008 Mikhail Khodorkovsky started a hunger strike.
Shortly after he was accused of two new crimes: theft and money laundering. After almost two years of trial, on December 30, 2010 he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
On December 20, 2013, he was released by a pardon from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Currently residing in Switzerland.
