Michael Stephen “Mike” Portnoy (born April 20, 1967) is an American drummer and musical composer. He grew up in Long Island, Nassau, New York, where his interest in music began at an early age. He is primarily known for his work in the progressive metal band Dream Theater working as a composer, drummer and director of the DVDs of Dream Theater. Famous for his talent in drums, Portnoy has won 23 awards from Modern Drummer magazine. He produced six Dream Theater albums with John Petrucci, starting with Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory and ending with Black Clouds & amp; Silver Linings. In 2010 he met with Avenged Sevenfold to record along with the band his new album, Nightmare, in which he recorded the drum tracks. It is worth noting that he has developed a great ability to sing, which shows in the Dream Theater albums where he choirs, second voice, and has even been the main voice in the first verse of the song Take the Time on the DVD Chaos in Motion, and the end of the song A Nightmare to Remember.
In September 2010 he announced that he was leaving Dream Theater. Currently, he is taking advantage of his time dictating drum courses for his fans while working on five projects with different personalities of wide musical trajectory.
Mike Portnoy’s Biography
He received lessons from drummer Mirson Navarro (Primus Of Fire) at a school of higher education in California. During this time, he began playing in local bands such as Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the latter releasing his own album. Then Mike left the band and emigrated to Berklee College of Music, Boston.
Mike became part of the band Majesty, which due to legal problems was later called Dream Theater. With this band he became well known in the musical environment, and is considered one of the best current drummers, for many (among others the Modern Drummer magazine) the best of the progressive scene.
Portnoy claims to have had the greatest influence on Neil Peart, Rush’s drummer. Other of his favorite drummers include Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Phillips, John Bonham, Nick Mason, Nicko McBrain, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, Eric Carr and Bill Bruford and bands such as The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, U2, Iron Maiden Kiss, and The Who.
He is a great collector. It owns and collects Dream Theater memorabilia, such as posters, models, etc. He also has a room for each of his favorite groups in which he has a lot of memories of those groups and also other rooms dedicated to his favorite drummers in which he has their drum sets. He also has a room full of his favorite record collection and also has movies like the episodes of The Simpsons. In his free time he likes to be with his family, play drums or play sports. Among his most notable hobbies are boxing, film and music of course.
Portnoy has won 23 awards from “Modern Drummer” magazine, including “Best Educational Video” (2 times), “Best Recording” (6 times) and “Best Progressive Rock Drummer” (12 times in a row). also considered by many experts as the best drummer today and in recent years. He has also been founding some other progressive rock bands such as: Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment, and O.S.I.
He is known for using gigantic kits so much so that they are called monsters: Siamese Monster, on the Train of Thought tour, Albino Monster on the Octavarium tour, Mirage Monster on the Systematic Chaos tour and the latest Black & amp; Silver Monster from the album tour Black Clouds & amp; Silver Linings and you can not leave aside the majestic and legendary Purple Monster (used during the tour of the album “Scenes from a memory”).
His personality is somewhat cheerful and funny, Dream Theater was normal to see him making jokes and jokes (the opposite of bassist John Myung) (as seen in the camera of Jordan Rudess on the DVD Chaos In Motion).

“Yes, the rumors are true … Sadly my time with Avenged Sevenfold has come to an end … The group has decided to continue without me in 2011.have had a great time with them in 2010, but it was their decision to end the relationship later this year, as planned in the initial plans. “
On December 20, 2010, he moved to Nashville and entered the studio again with Neal Morse to record the project: Neal Morse’s Testimony 2.
