Mikael Akerfeldt Short Bio

Mikael Åkerfeldt (Stockholm, Sweden, April 17, 1974) is the composer, vocalist and main guitarist of the Swedish progressive metal band Opeth and former vocalist of the band (also Swedish) of death metal Bloodbath.

He was the vocalist of Eruption, a death metal band that he formed in 1988 and dissolved in 1990, when Mikael auditioned for Opeth. When the vocalist of this one, David Isberg, insisted to him to be united to the band, the other members left the formation. Then David himself assumed the duties of guitarist and, when two years later he decided to leave Opeth for differences of creation, it was Mikael who replaced him as vocalist. He was also vocalist and guitarist of the group Sörskogen, guitarist of the Steel group, and collaborates in the formation Storm Corrosion.

Mikael stands out for his great style of composition, strongly influenced by progressive rock, and his ability to sing indistinctively in melodic and aggressive guttural tones.

He is a collector of dark rock bands from the 70s, as well as heavy metal and tends to refer to these bands in his compositions, such as Blackwater Park (title of Opeth’s fifth album, 2001) and ” The Master’s Apprentices “(fifth song of the album, also by Opeth, Deliverance, 2002).

Mikael revealed in September 2009 that he was contemplating recording an acoustic record as a soloist, however, in 2014, he expressed that he does not need a solo project, in order to focus more on Opeth.
