Michael George Westmore I (born March 22, 1938) is an American make-up artist best known for his work in various Star Trek productions, winning nine Emmy Awards, and is a member of the family. Westmore. He won the Academy Award for best makeup in 1985 for his work in the Mask movie. His career began at Universal Studios in 1961, and spanned more than four decades, including work for the CIA, which consisted of creating makeup kits for spies abroad.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Westmore is the son of Mont Westmore, the husband of model Marion Bergeson Westmore, father of McKenzie Westmore, Michele Westmore Meeks, and Michael Westmore II and brother of Marvin Westmore, and Monty Westmore, who are also makeup artists. Her family is very involved in the Hollywood makeup business. In 1917 his grandfather George Westmore had created the first makeup department studio, Michael’s father was a makeup artist for Gone With the Wind and his uncle was Bud Westmore, famous for the co-creation of the creature in monster of the black lagoon.
He graduated in 1961 from the University of California-Santa Barbara and a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He began working for Universal Studios in 1961 as a make-up artist, and was promoted after three years to Assistant Head of the Make-up Department.He was apprenticed to John Chambers in 1963 in the movie The Messenger List Adrian. He had some of his first roles in Universal including The Munsters and the Lost. He became an independent makeup artist during the 1970s and ’80s, working on films like Rocky and Wild Bull. By Raging Bull, Westmore designed the prosthetic noses that Robert De Niro wore throughout the film, and the makeup that simulated bleeding although he used tubes placed under the fake skin. One of the most unusual effects used in the boxing film was a special effect that showed a nose shattering on the screen.He worked with Tom Burman in makeup sets for the Central Intelligence Agency by foreign agents to change identities . A set created by the pair sold for $ 20,000 in 2011.
In 1985, he appeared in a VHS video called Finding his Best with Michael Westmore, who was hired in 1986 to work on Star Trek: The New Generation, and would work on the rest of the Star Trek television series. One of his first roles was the development of the makeup used by Brent Spiner to create the data character, he left the Star Trek franchise in 2005, after the cancellation of the enterprise series.
After Star Trek, he entered a state of semi-retirement and worked on the musical version of mask, after having worked on the film version. He was responsible for the makeup of Kamal Hassan in the Shankar directed film Tamil Indian called “Indian”. He also spent eighteen months in the Indian cinema Dasavathaaram, where actor Kamal Haasan made ten different roles that each required his prosthesis. He has started working as a producer and his goal is to write a two-volume autobiography. He also made a special appearance in the third final of the reality TV series Makeup Face Off, alongside his daughter McKenzie Westmore, who is the host of the show. After that, he has appeared in the following seasons as a mentor to the contestants of the show.
