Michael Rasmussen (Tølløse, June 1, 1974) is a Danish cyclist who competed in road and mountain races, his greatest successes on the road are sixth in the Tour overall. of France 2005 and the seventh in the Vuelta a España 2003, as well as five stages won in the Grandes Vueltas: four in the Tour de France and one in the Vuelta a España .In mountain he won a gold medal in the World Championship of Mountain Biking 1999 in the cross-country test.
Being a prominent climber, his style was characterized by attacking in large mountain stages, far from the finish line, in order to manage a general advantage over the bulk of the peloton, since he usually lost time in the time trials. Taking advantage of his ability to climb, he tried to play until the last moment the stage to the favorites and, incidentally, get a good handful of points in the large mountain scoring ports, quality that made him win the mountain jersey in the Tour twice.
Resides in Lago di Garda, Italy. He is married to the Mexican cyclist Cariza Muñoz Carrete, with whom he is the father of a child. As a curious fact, his political family nicknamed him “El Pollo” because he was white and thin-built. This nickname transcended the sports press.
Before competing in road cycling, he was a competitor of mountain biking, proclaiming himself a champion in the ARE ’99 World Championship.
He started as a professional on the road at the end of 2001 in the CSC-Tiscali team, although he had already won a professional victory in that same year by winning a stage of the Jadranska Magistrala, before running for the Rabobank team in 2003.
Expulsion from the Tour
In the Tour of 2007 his team made the decision to withdraw him from that competition being a leader with an advantage of more than three minutes compared to the second classified and missing 4 stages for its conclusion. All this for not having been located during their training in June, which violates the current anti-doping regulations (the UCI regulations oblige professional cyclists to be always ready for an examination and of course to be found), and for having informed to his team that he was training in Mexico, when in reality he was training in northern Italy. In total, it lacked 4 controls (2 from the Danish Federation and 2 from the UCI) when the maximum is 3.
The director of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme, told the international press that “We can not say that Rasmussen cheated, but his lack of seriousness and his lies about his whereabouts are unbearable”.
Return to competition
In the month of July 2009, the Danish cyclist announced his return to the competition once he had completed his sanction, which ended on the 25th of that month. He reappeared in the exhibition race of the Designa Grandprix de Kjellerup, in Denmark, two days after the end of this sanction, race in which he finished second. At the end of the race he declared that he wanted to race the Tour of Denmark and the Tour of Spain, as long as he found a way for the UCI to grant him the license withdrawn after the 2007 Tour scandal. However, no European team wanted take charge of his situation and ended up calling “unofficially” in the Mexican team Tecos of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara also called simply Tecos-Trek, Continental category, at the end of 2009. Where his most outstanding performance was in the Return to Chihuahua where he won the prologue stage that ran through a mountainous layout and finally was sixth in the general classification. He also won the amateur race of the Vuelta a Puebla where he also won a stage. Also in 2009 he competed in the mountain bike race Popobike marathon in Atlixco Puebla, being in third place.
When the Mexican team disappeared in 2010, Michael had to find a new team.
In 2010 he was surprisingly announced as enrolled in the Tour of San Luis with the Miche team that until that date had not announced his signing but a few days after the signing was confirmed and participation in that race where he finished eighth. That was his most outstanding result with that team after the contract was rescinded in April due to mononucleosis.
In August 2010, strong rumors began to sound that Rasmussen would be running for Saxo Bank of Bjarne Riis in 2011, however he eventually signed on to the modest team Christina Watches-Onfone, a Continental team that already sponsored him individually in amateur careers during the months he was without a team in 2010. Michael presented an ambitious project in which he was to be the leader and future director of that team.
On January 31, 2013, he gave a press conference, accompanied by company manager Christina Watches Claus Hembo, in which he admitted to doping from 1998 to 2010. He was immediately fired from the team, but Claus Hembo notified that when he completes his punishment he will return as the team’s sporting director. Rasmussen also reported that he was retiring and that he was going to collaborate with the authorities as much as he could.
