Michael Fred Phelps II (Baltimore, Maryland, June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer and the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, with a total of 28 medals. Phelps also holds the records for the most Olympic gold medals (23), more gold medals in individual events (13) and more Olympic medals in men’s events (15).
At the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, after winning eight gold medals, Phelps was established as the highest gold medalist in a single edition of the games. Five of those medals were in individual events, equaling the record of Eric Heiden and Vitaly Scherbo as multiple gold medalists in individual events in a single edition. At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Phelps won four gold medals and two silver medals, becoming the most medalist of the games for the third time in a row.
Phelps is the world record holder in the 100 and 200 meter butterfly long pool, and the combined 400 meters, as well as the 200m freestyle and combined world exlusmarist.
