Michael Novak (Johnstown, Pennsylvania, September 9, 1933-Washington DC, February 17, 2017) was an American Catholic philosopher and diplomat. Author of more than 25 books on philosophy and theology of culture, Novak is known for his book The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism (1982). In 1994 he was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, which included a prize of one million US dollars delivered at Buckingham Palace. Write books and articles focused on capitalism, religion and democratization policies.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude at Stonehill College in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and English in 1956, continuing his postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he completed a Sacrae Theologiae Baccalaureus (academic degree in theology) in 1958, and, later, at Harvard University, where he obtained a Master of Arts in history and philosophy of religion in 1966.

Novak worked as a correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter during the second session of the Second Vatican Council in Rome, where he also had the opportunity to complete a book due to a contract that another reporter had with an editorial but could not fulfill. The result was the second book by Novak The Open Church, a journalistic account of what happened during the second session of the Council.

In 1993 he received an honorary doctorate from Universidad Francisco Marroquín for his commitment to the ideas of freedom.

In 1994 he received the Templeton Prize.

In 2016 he joined the Tim and Steph Busch School of Business and Economics at the Catholic University of America as visiting professor.
