Mel_Ferrer’s Biography

Melchor Gastón Ferrer was born in Elberon (New Jersey, United States). Of Spanish origin, he was the son of a Cuban emigrant, José María Ferrer and his wife, the American Mary Matilda Irene O’Donohue.

He debuted at the age of twenty-three as an actor on Broadway. The paper that took to the fame to him was Lost Boundaries, and soon it participated in excellent films like Encubridora of Fritz Lang (with Marlene Dietrich) and the musical film Lili (with Leslie Caron).

His greatest successes were period films such as Scaramouche and the superproductions War and Peace (along with numerous stars such as Henry Fonda, Audrey Hepburn and Anita Ekberg) and The Fall of the Roman Empire, shot in Spain with Sophia Loren, Christopher Plummer and James Mason.

Ferrer participated in two films by Marisol, the great star of Spanish cinema: Cabriola (as director) and La chica del mill rojo (as an actor). In 1966 he played the painter El Greco in a European co-production, and in 1974 he participated in the Italian horror film El Anticristo.

He also made television appearances as a guest star in series such as Colombo or Vacaciones en el Mar. Already in the 1980s he played an increasingly relevant role in the first three seasons of the famous television series Falcon Crest, playing the friend , lawyer, confidant and, in the final chapters of her participation in the series, brief second husband of Angela Channing-main character played by Jane Wyman. Despite his stated participation in the fourth season, he was fired for salary reasons.

His love life was pretty hectic. He married Frances Gunby Pilchard twice with a separation period of five years, during which he was married fifteen years with Barbara C. Tripp. Later he married Audrey Hepburn, with whom he had his son Sean H. Ferrer, also an actor. He died of heart failure on June 2, 2008 at the age of 90.
