Whitman grew up in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. After high school, he attended Princeton University where in 1977 he earned an economist’s degree. In 1979, he obtained an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School.
Whitman started his working life at Procter & amp; Gamble in 1979 and until 1981, where he served as Brand Manager. Later he worked for eight years in the consulting firm Bain and Company, reaching the position of vice president.
In the period from 1989 to 1992, Whitman worked at the Walt Disney Company, where she served as Senior Vice President of marketing for the consumer products division.
From 1995 to 1997, Whitman was President and CEO of Florists Transworld Delivery (FTD), a position she left to become the General Manager of Hasbro Inc’s pre-school division.
She has been president and CEO of the eBay Internet store since March 1998. She joined eBay when the company had 30 employees and only operated in the United States. Currently, eBay is a global organization with more than 9,000 employees.
In addition to the management of eBay, she is on the Board of Directors of Procter & amp; Gamble and DreamWorks SKG. According to Forbes Magazine, Whitman’s fortune was estimated at more than $ 1.5 billion for 2005.
In 2005, she was interviewed by the Disney Board to succeed Michael Eisner as CEO, a nomination she rejected after a week, forcing the selection of Robert Iger.
In 2010 she tried to make the leap to politics and was a Republican candidate for the post of Governor of the State of California, but lost the election against Jerry Brown.
In January 2011, she joined the Board of Directors of Hewlett Packard and on September 22 of the same year she was appointed CEO, succeeding Leo Apotheker 11 months after her appointment.
Whitman decided to split HP’s business by creating two new companies, HPInc. focused on the business of printers and personal computers and chaired by Dion Weisler and HP Enterprise (HPE) of which Whitman is also CEO dedicated to systems and services for companies, software, management and virtual storage services.
In November 2015, he gave the HPE exit bell on Wall Street culminating his project.
