Maya Angelou, born under the name Marguerite Annie Johnson ; (Saint Louis, April 4, 1928 – Winston-Salem, May 28, 2014) was an American author, poet, dancer, actress, and singer. He published seven autobiographies, three essay books, several poetry books and is also credited with a list of theatrical works, films and television shows that were relevant for more than 50 years. Angelou received dozens of awards and more than fifty honorary titles, Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on childhood experiences and early adulthood. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells about her life until she was 17 years old and led her to international recognition and acclaim.

She became author and poet after having a whole series of occupations in her youth, including cook, prostitute, dancer and actress of nightclubs, member of the cast of Porgy and Bess, coordinator of the Southern Conference of Christian Leadership and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa. She was an actress, author, director and producer of plays, films and television programs. In 1982, he earned his first American Studies faculty at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was active during the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. In the mid-1990s, Angelou made about 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something that he continued to do until his eightieth birthday. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton, making her the first poet to recite her work at an inauguration since Robert Frost at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. < / p>
