Maxine Kumin (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1925 – Warner, New Hampshire, February 6, 2014) was an American poet who, among other awards, received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry .
Maxine Kumin was born in 1925 in Philadelphia. Kumin, although the daughter of Jewish parents, went to a Catholic nursery and school. He obtained his degree in 1946 and a Master of Arts in 1948 at Radcliffe College. In June 1946 he married Victor Kumin, an engineering consultant; They had two daughters and a son. In 1957 he began studying poetry with John Holmes at the Boston Center for Adult Education. There he met Anne Sexton, with whom he established a friendship that lasted until Sexton’s suicide in 1974. Kumin was an English teacher from 1958 to 1961 and from 1965 to 1968 at Tufts University; From 1961 to 1963 she was visiting professor at Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study. She was also chosen as a poet in residence and visitor in many American universities. Since 1976, she and her husband lived on a farm in Warner, New Hampshire, where they were engaged in horse breeding.
