Maurice grew up with his family in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, England. In 1958 he and his family moved to Brisbane, Australia, staying in one of the poorest suburbs, Cribb Island, which was later demolished to make room for Brisbane Airport.

Maurice loved paintball, and he had a team he called “Royal Rat Rangers,” a reference to his appointment as Commander of the British Empire, and in his time to the “Little River AA group,” where members referred to each other. to others as “river rats.” He promoted the sport at every opportunity, and opened a paintball equipment store called “Commander Mo’s Paintball Shop,” in North Miami Beach, Florida.

Maurice was married to the Scottish pop star Lulu from 1969 to 1973; they had no children, and the pressure of their respective commitments led them to divorce.

Along with his second wife Yvonne, Maurice had two children: Adam and Samantha.

Maurice Gibb died unexpectedly at the Miami Beach Hospital, Florida, on January 12, 2003, at age 53, due to a complication of a bowel obstruction. After his death, his brothers Robin Gibb and Barry Gibb announced that they would no longer act under the name of Bee Gees.
