Matthew Paul Miller’s Biography
Matthew Paul Miller was born in West Chester (Pennsylvania, United States) on June 30, 1979, which according to the Jewish calendar corresponds to the 5 Tammuz date of 5739 (Tammuz is the tenth month of the Jewish calendar, and 5739 it is the year of the Jewish computation since the creation of the world). Soon after, his family moved to Berkeley (California) and later to White Plains (New York). At the age of 12, one of his first dreams was to become a professional hockey player for the NHL. He was a Grateful Dead fan, he grew dreadlocks, played bongos and learned to imitate a drum machine from the last desks in the class. After almost setting fire to her chemistry class, she decided to go on a camping trip to Colorado. In the Rocky Mountains, far from the urban life of White Plains, Matisyahu claims that he discovered his God …
His spiritual curiosity took him to Israel on a journey that meant a turning point in his life. Matisyahu took advantage of the time by praying, studying and thinking about music in Jerusalem. His dormant Jewish identity came to his consciousness and on his return he went to an institute in Bend (Oregon), introducing himself in reggae and hip hop. Every week he went to an amateur store where he rapped, sang, hit the beatbox, and remained active creatively. It was then that he began to develop the reggae-hip hop sound that today is so characteristic to him.
Matisyahu returned to New York to study at The New School, where he continued to develop his music and made his first steps in the theater. He also went to the Carlebach Shul, a synagogue on the Upper West Side known for its hippie environment and the exuberance of its songs, where he converted to Hasidic Judaism. While studying at The New School, Matisyahu wrote a play called Echad (‘one’ in Hebrew), which dealt with a boy who meets a Hasidic rabbi and converts to religion. Shortly after the premiere of the play, Matisyahu’s life strangely imitated his art. Years after he caught the first spark of religiosity in him, Matisyahu met Rabbi Lubavitch, initiating Matthew’s transformation into Matisyahu. The person who had been so long skeptical of authority and rules, adapted to the discipline and structure of Judaism, strictly following its laws and engaging in an intellectual challenge and spiritual dialogue that he had sought for a decade. Today, Matisyahu lives in Crown Heights, dividing his time between the stage and the Yeshiva (institution for the study of the Torah, the most important document of Judaism).
Currently Matisyahu is married, the name of his wife is Tahlia Miller (married name) and father of a man, Laivy Miller. A part of another child, born not so long ago.
