It is a Gothic novel where it is ironic about religious hypocrisy. He wrote it in just ten weeks. Lord Byron and the Marquis de Sade gave their approval to the novel in their corresponding writings. \n In 1812, after the death of his father, he took charge of his father's possessions in Jamaica. He returned to England, and was also occasionally in Switzerland, where he coincided with his friends Lord Byron, John William Polidori, Mary Shelley and Percy Shelley, but he soon returned to his possessions. Then he traveled to Jamaica and back to Europe in 1818 he contracted yellow fever and died. \n As a result of his long stay in America, he wrote Diario de un plandor de las Antillas, published posthumously in 1833. \n Other outstanding works by the author were Cuentos de terror, from 1799; Wonderful stories of 1801; and the theatrical works The Spectrum of the Castle, of 1796 ;, The Indian, of 1799 and Alfonso, of 1801.
