Matthew James Bellamy’s Biography

Matthew is the son of George Bellamy, guitarist of the British band The Tornadoes. This band was the first in England to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with the song “Telstar.” The guitar sounds in Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia” are inspired by “Telstar.” Bellamy’s mother, Marilyn , was born in Belfast, and moved to England in the decade of the ’70. On his first day in England he met George, who at the time was working as a taxi driver in London. Later they moved to Cambridge, where Matthew’s older brother, Paul Bellamy, was born, followed by Matt’s birth in 1978. In the mid-1980s, the family moved to Teignmouth. He started playing the piano at 6 years old, although not in a disciplined way. His first performance was in 1991 when he was 12 years old, playing the piano at his Teignmouth Community College.

At age 14, her parents separated, when she started living with her grandmother for a while. Also at this time he began to gain interest in the guitar, which he had started playing since he was 10 years old, and always assuring that he was self-taught. The only time he took classes was a Spanish guitar for six months, from which he took the base for the B-side “Bedroom Acoustics”. He wanted to learn guitar when he saw Jimi Hendrix doing his classic “guitar sacrifice”, burning it on stage. Its greater influence in guitar, nevertheless, it received it of Tom Morello, whom it saw for the first time next to Rage Against the Machine in a live concert.

At this same time, he began to play in bands within his school. Bellamy started in a band called Carnage Mayhem. In December of 1992 he left her to join the band Gothic Plague, whose drummer was a young Dominic Howard, replacing him as a guitarist and vocalist. The group used to play covers of other bands, but Bellamy, after the separation of their parents, had enough motivation to compose their own songs for the band. However, the members rejected Bellamy’s proposal to compose for the band, and after that, they renounced the group in pursuit of other interests. In search of a bass player, they contacted Chris Wolstenholme, who played drums in a band called Fixed Penalty. They convinced him to take bass lessons, and after accepting, the current Muse group was formed in 1994.

Under the name Rocket Baby Dolls, they won the “Battle of the bands” at their school, which led Bellamy and the others to take the band seriously and decided to change the name to a more “professional” one: Muse . Together with the other members, they decided to move from Teignmouth to London, where they would begin their musical career. Bellamy has been the main composer of the band since its inception, including on many occasions its lyrics oriented to political corruption, conspiracy and religion.

In the early eras of Muse, his songs were heavily influenced by alternative rock and grunge that predominated in the world of Western music, such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins. Bellamy was influenced by the vocal style of Jeff Buckley, whom he considers to be one of his favorite musicians.

With time, the band managed to acquire a more own style, to venture into electronic sounds and classical music within their compositions. As for classical music, it has its origins in Bellamy, who liked to play piano pieces by Rahmaninov – from him he created the basis for the song Space Dementia – and recently, from other pianists like Chopin – whom he makes a tribute after the song United States of Eurasia -.

After the end of the Absolution tour, the band moved to New York, United States, for the process of composing their album Black Holes and Revelations. Afterwards they returned to settle in England until now.
