Mata Hari’s Biography

His parents divorced and the mother died a couple of years after the divorce; the father remarried Susanna Catharina ten Hoove (1844-1913). His teenage daughter, who was beginning to stand out for her beauty, went to live first with her godfather and then with her uncle; and studied to be a teacher.

The couple moved to Java, where MacLeod had been assigned, and had two children: Norman-John (1897) and Louise Jeanne (1898). In 1899 the children became ill and Norman-John died. Although she is likely to die of complications from the treatment of syphilis infected by her parents, there were allegations of an alleged poisoning in revenge for her husband’s treatment of a native servant. The death of this son was a blow to a marriage already deteriorated. The husband sought shelter in the drink. It is said [appointment & nbsp; required] that this solitude led Mata Hari to his first contacts with the Javanese culture, especially the Balinese folk dances and with the oriental techniques of love, which would later give him fame as a luxury courtesan.
