Mary Gauthier (New Orleans, March 11, 1962) is an American singer of American, folk and alternative country genres.
Born in Louisiana, abandoned by her mother in an asylum, she was adopted when she was one year old by a couple of Italian origin. At the age of 15, he escapes from home and spends the following years between the abuse of alcohol, drugs and various attempts at rehabilitation in search of his own sexual identity and his own roots. University of Louisiana, obtains a diploma at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, professional cooking institution. She opens a cajun restaurant in Boston where she will work for 11 years, and in 1990 she is arrested for drunk driving. This fact leads to a decided change of route. He becomes abstemious and begins to write songs.
He publishes his first album Dixie Kitchen in 1997. To pay the expenses for the recordings of the next album he sells the part he owned in the restaurant. In 1998 comes the second album Drag Queens in Limousines that gets the best reviews and thanks to which it is called to play in the main folk festivals of the country like the Newport Folk Festival, it receives the best folk album award in the Independent Music Awards.

In 2010 he received the “New Artist of the Year” award from The Americana Music Association. Mercy Now was voted No. 6 Record of the Decade by No Depression magazine. In 2015 she was nominated by GLAAD Outstanding Music, Artist of the Year, at the 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, in Los Angeles.
