Daughter of Edward Marion Mason, Jr., and Catharine Kentwood-Mason, grew up with her younger sister Linda (1943) in Elmont Lane, Crestwood, Missouri, graduating from Webster University. Studied in New York at the HB Studio of Uta Hagen and Herbert Bergdorf.

Fought in the theater company of repertoire American Conservatory Theater of San Francisco directed by Bill Ball where it interpreted Hedda Gabler, Cyrano de Bergerac, House of dolls, the merchant of Venice and the witches of Salem among others.

In New York he debuted in 1965 in Flor de cactus and Norman Mailer’s Deer Park. In 1972 he debuted in film in Blume in Love by Paul Mazursky with George Segal. In 1973, the author Neil Simon chose her for the staging on Broadway of his piece The Good Doctor. A year later they were married and she starred with James Caan in the Cinderella Liberty movie that earned her her first Oscar nomination and her first Golden Globe. The couple moved to Hollywood.

In 1977, she received the Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Actress, a BAFTA Award nomination and the second Oscar nomination for Neil Simon’s La chica del fave. In 1979 it was Jennie MacLaine in the film adaptation of the piece of Simon Chapter two, based on the relationship of both that earned her her third nomination as best actress.

In 1981, Mason starred in Just When I Rhyme, adaptation of Simon’s piece, The Gingerbread Lady (originally written for theater for Maureen Stapleton) conquering a fourth nomination. The following year with Max Dugan Returns, she found her first failure despite being accompanied by Donald Sutherland, Jason Robards and Matthew Broderick.

At that time, in 1983 Simon and Mason divorced and their film career quickly declined despite filming with Clint Eastwood in 1986 Heartbreak Ridge and directing for television in 1987, Little Miss Perfect.

In 1996 he starred in The Night of the Iguana in New York and in 1999 in London reunited with Richard Dreyfuss for The Prisoner of Second Avenue by Neil Simon at the Royal Haymarket Theater.

In 2001, she played Ethel Gumm, the mother of Judy Garland in the TV movie Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows with Judy Davis and in August 2005 reappeared on Broadway at Steel Magnolias, with Delta Burke , Frances Sternhagen, Rebecca Gayheart, Lily Rabe and Christine Ebersole.

Other television appearances include Seinfeld, Lipstick Jungle, Army Wives and Frasier that earned him the Emmy Award in 1997.

In 2005 she appears on TV in the JAG series as a civil judge. In 2006 he was Hécuba (play) by Euripides at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and worked on Impressions by Michael Jacob with Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen.

In 1993 he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he directed El jardín de los cerezos and founded in Abiquiú, New Mexico – a place where artist Georgia O’Keefe lived – an organic farming establishment for medicinal herbs based on the Rudolf Steiner’s theory of biodynamic agriculture called Resting In The River in the neighborhood where Shirley MacLaine resides who suggested the site for the farm
